After a decade of intermittent hatha yoga practice, I overheard a comment about my "unusual" posture. To my surprise, I immediately dissolved into a river of tears. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop crying. The buried feelings that I carried about the relentless pain in my back and self-consciousness about my appearance burst through my well-developed dam of denial. The more effort I put into stopping my tears, the more resolved I became to addressing my scoliosis. As I searched for an answer, I kept hearing one word over and over. The word was "yoga."
I recommitted to my yoga practice and began to attend classes with regularity. Concomitantly, I began to search for a yoga teacher in the Detroit area that worked with scoliosis. I came up empty and had the thought, "maybe that teacher is suppose to be me." When I entered my yoga teacher training program, I was blown away by how deep, wide, and beautiful the practice of really yoga is. I thought I was seeking a solution to my scoliosis and, to my amazement, I was finding the answer to my 20-year path of spiritual seeking. Yoga was my path, my spiritual home. I earned my RYT-200 and began the joyful practice of teaching in local yoga studios. Throughout my teaching experience, I have been drawn to the therapeutic applications of yoga and offer classes that focus on back care and emotional health.
Following three and a half years of teaching, I completed my Yoga for Scoliosis teacher training with Elise Browning Miller. I currently teach at two suburban Detroit yoga studios (www.namaste-yoga.net and www.bodylanguagefitnessyoga.com) and offer private sessions to students interested in working with their scoliosis and/or their emotional bodies.
In addition to my E-RYT-500, I am a Ph.D. licensed psychologist, and an Enneagram and mindfulness meditation teacher. I have completed the Level 1 Lifeforce Yoga for Depression and Anxiety Teacher Training with Amy Weintraub and Spirit Rock's Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training Program.
