Karyn Bristol has been a dedicated student of yoga since 1986. Her practice had such a powerful, transformative effect on her life that she decided to become a yoga teacher. She has been teaching Iyengar yoga since 2002.
In 2003, Karyn graduated from the Iyengar Institute in San Francisco where she received a strong foundation in the Iyengar system. In 2004, Karyn completed Kofi Busia’s teaching training program, which deepened her understanding of yoga philosophy and the deeper foundations of yoga. She continues to attend Kofi’s advanced classes every week. Karyn believes it is her own daily practice and ongoing experience as a yoga student that gives her compassion for her own students and the understanding of the fears and challenges they face when they come to the mat.
During a 2004 apprenticeship with Elise Miller in Los Altos, California, Karyn was moved by the incredible healing effect yoga had on people with scoliosis and other serious back issues, and began to offer back care classes soon afterwards. She completed a 20-hour yoga for scoliosis training with Elise in 2008.
Karyn’s Yoga for Back Care classes are designed for beginners and more experienced yoga students with scoliosis and other back problems. In a safe, supportive environment, students explore yoga as a path to heal and maintain a healthy back, and to prevent future injuries. Weaving basic back care techniques with breath work, Karyn helps students build strength, increase flexibility and experience joy in their bodies. She also works with people individually.
Karyn is registered with Yoga Alliance at the RYT 500 hour level. She teaches at Yoga Within in Aptos and has sees private clients in her lovely yurt studio, set in her garden in Santa Cruz, California.
** Karyn is an Iyengar Certified Instructor who has done additional training with Elise to become a Yoga for Scoliosis certified instructor. She is highly qualified because of her Iyengar training and has a deep understanding of how to work with scoliosis.
