Elaine Prendergast-Paulson began her yoga practice in 1991 as a complement to distance running and to avoid a surgical “cure” for progressive scoliosis. She was certified to teach in 2000 and began practice in the Iyengar tradition in 2002 with Joan White, a master Iyengar teacher in Philadelphia. This tradition, with its profound attention to postural precision, helps practitioners develop an acute awareness--from the inside out--of their own anatomies. Being mindful of the arrangement of muscles, bones and joints that constitute healthy alignment has helped Elaine identify and counteract negative posture habits through her personal yoga practice and attention to everyday movement. Taking a primary role in treating her scoliosis has been empowering, and has motivated her to pass these strategies along. Her studies with Elise Browning Miller in Yoga for Back Care and Yoga for Scoliosis have helped her fine-tune her practice and enhance teaching skills to bring that knowledge, awareness and empowerment to others. Her students include just-diagnosed adolescents who want to prevent progression of their scoliosis and adults who experience pain from a variety of postural issues. Elaine is co-director of Wellspring Center for Yoga & Health in Merchantville, New Jersey. She is also a psychotherapist who uses yoga as an adjunct to treatment, facilitating clients' greater congruence of mind, body and spirit.
